WHAT TO EXPECT FROM
THE NEW REGULATIONS
As of January 1, 2022, the IATA Packing Instructions PI 965 and PI 968 no longer contain Section II provisions of the DGR. Hence, packages containing lithium-ion and lithium metal batteries are now considered Fully Regulated shipments under Section IB of the packing instructions.
The UN banned the transportation of standalone lithium-ion batteries on passenger aircraft. To ship standalone lithium-ion batteries and lithium batteries on passenger aircraft, it’s necessary to have a special permit from an authorised body.
Standalone battery shipments are no longer covered by Section II. The enactment permit shippers to ship small batteries by air with fewer restrictions and without extensive training in Dangerous Goods.
The state of charge limitations, consignment, and overpack restrictions still apply. Standalone lithium-ion batteries (UN3480) can only be shipped by air if the state of charge is at 30% or less.
The 2016 restrictions apply only to standalone lithium-ion batteries (UN3480) & passenger aircraft. Lithium metal batteries (UN3090) are also prohibited on passenger aircraft.However, passenger flights may still permit lithium batteries packed with or contained in equipment (UN3091 & UN3481), as long as the relevant packing instructions ( PI 966, 967, 969 & 970) are adhered to.
